EP Review: Owen James Harvey - Owen James Harvey (City Lights)

Nottingham-based singer-songwriter Owen James Harvey releases his new self-titled EP, which once again demonstrates a flair for writing easily accessible and melodic songs with a clear and crisp acoustic sound throughout. Following Owen's debut full-length album DISAPPEARING STRANGERS (2009), the young songsmith once again shows an ability to write songs with a universal appeal, drawing in audiences who not only appreciate songs with a country roots/Americana feel, but also songs that fit well within the pop/MOR canon.

Joined once again by family band The Adeys, Russ and James on guitar/mandolin and bass respectively, the new EP also features contributions from Flow Toulman on drums, Stuart Noakes on keyboards and Sam Proctor on violin. Interestingly one of the selections here, Till the Day I Die was recorded and mixed in Nashville with Bobby Terry at the helm, who also plays all the instruments, a song that has been garnering some attention nationally, being shortlisted for Labelled Independent's Track of the Year. With a steadily growing reputation both as a live performer and recording artist, this EP will serve as an excellent souvenir for those lucky enough to catch Owen on stage in 2012.
